How HVAC Systems Work

HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and is a system that can be found in thousands of buildings. HVAC systems help to control the quality, temperature, and movement of air, which helps to properly ventilate a given space. Find out more.

Most of the energy used by the HVAC system is to cool and heat the air, although the fans that properly distribute the air throughout the building also consume energy. Using direct contact, air is cooled using refrigerants then pushed through different ducts (or tubes), and exits these ducts through vents in the building to circulate. The process repeats itself as long as the system is turned on, and both proper insulation and filters help keep everything running smoothly. The heat in an HVAC system is forced heat, where air is heated in a furnace that uses electricity or gas, although in some cases heat pumps may be used to generate heat. The heat pump, often found to be a more efficient generator, draws heat from the air in cooler weather through compression. There are several types of HVAC systems that come in different sizes and ranges of complexity. Some of these consist of a Single Zone, Multiple Zone, Constant Volume, Radiant Systems, and Variable Volume system. Some of these systems only serve one area of a building, while there are other systems that serve multiple sections of a building at once.
